In Regency period, ladies secured their hats with appropriate ribbons, ties, buttons and bows. In the 1820s and 30s hats were still of reasonable size and only small discreet hat pins were used to keep them in place. However, by the late Victorian times, hats began to grow, even to gigantic proportions. The heyday of the hat pin was in the Edwardian era, brought to the fore by musical stars who created huge creations, the bigger the hat the longer and bigger the hat pin. Not surprisingly, they became a very useful aid to self defence and it was even reported once how a judge instructed suffragettes on trial to remove their hat pins, fearing they use as weapons. Today they are mostly just beautiful collectors items.

Under the hammer in our sale of 26th February the boats came sailing in when three seascapes by Welsh Artist Warren Williams all achieved prices nearing £1000 each and another seascape by the local artist Victor Noble Rainbird sold for £520 plus commission and just behind was the good ship “Lochness” a fine hand made model in glass cabinet which sold for £115, again plus commission.
